Roe deer is among the most noble of game. A roe deer should not be confused with a red deer. Red deer are significantly larger and heavier than roe deer, growing as tall as a horse: up to 1.40 metres. Growing to an average of about 70 centimetres, roe deer don’t grow larger than a large dog.
Roe deer live in herds scattered across Europe, from Scotland and central Sweden to the Mediterranean, and are also found in parts of Asia. Within the area it inhabits, the roe deer prefers young tree leaves, but roe deer are sometimes also found in larger forests where there is a lot of underwood. Their food consists of leaves and shoots of several species of deciduous trees, young rapeseed, barley, oats, peas and clover. Roe deer are gourmands, and you can taste that in their meat. They eat herbs, tree buds, crops and soft leaves.
