MARINE STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL

The MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) is an international, independent non-profit organisation. The MSC’s mission is to protect our oceans using its ecolabel and certification programme. The organisation was established to end overfishing and does so according to the following standards:

  • Fisheries Standard, for sustainable fisheries;
  • Traceability Standard, for transparent and traceable supply chains.

Luiten Food – Thomas Foods Europe works with fisheries that are MSC certified, which means that:

  • The fisheries do not overfish. Enough fish are left behind in the sea to maintain a healthy stock. (Sustainable fish stocks);
  • Fishery may not have a significant impact on marine life in a broader sense;
  • The fisheries comply with well-defined rules. (Best practices)

Luiten Food – Thomas Foods Europe is certified to the Traceability Standard (MSC Chain of custody).

AQUACULTURE STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL

The ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) is an international, independent non-profit organisation. They have developed a set of standards aimed at responsible aquaculture. ASC’s mission is to make aquaculture an environmentally and socially responsible industry using efficient market mechanisms that create value throughout the chain.

Aquaculture is a solution to meet the growing demand for fish. More than 50% of fish consumed globally already comes from aquaculture. The rapidly rising demand for farmed fish could result in improperly practised aquaculture. This can lead to water pollution, disruption of local ecosystems and poor working conditions. It is therefore vital to work with certified companies.
