Compared to animals raised in conventional farming, animals under the Better Life label have more living space, are given distraction material, live longer and have more opportunities to behave naturally.
In conventional broiler farming, animals are bred to grow faster and there is no natural light in the barns.

Our one-star Better Life free-range chicken comes from Poland.
In conventional broiler farming, chickens live with 18 birds per m2 on average. Better Life one star guidelines dictate there may only be 12 chickens per m2, and the animals must have a covered run at their disposal.
In addition, a slow-growing breed is used, play materials are provided, and the animals have a natural day and night cycle. Under the Better Life label, transport is shorter and more humane.

A free-range chicken with access to an outdoor run and two Better Life stars from Nature & Respect. These free-range chickens mainly stand out from other animal-friendly concepts because of their outdoor runs. Chickens should be outside. That is why the Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals has awarded two Better Life stars to these free-range chickens. Furthermore, the term ‘free-range chicken’ is familiar to consumers.
The 2-star Better Life free-range chicken can scratch around outside after 28 days and lives for at least 56 days.

The 3-star Better Life free-range chicken has even more living space than the 2-star chicken and lives longer because it is a slower-growing breed. Provided organic free-range chickens are stunned when slaughtered, the Better Life label automatically gives them 3 stars. On average, the animals are housed with 10 chickens per square metre, compared to 18 chickens in conventional poultry farming. Organic chickens also have 4 m2 of free-range outdoor area available to them. Non-organic chickens with 3 stars have 2 m2 of free range.
